What can singing do for you?
How to join
Visit a rehearsal or get in touch to let us know you’re interested in joining
Choose a voice part. We’ll help you figure out which voice part is best for you - we have basses, baritones, leads (melody singers) and tenors
Learn a song. We’ll give you a song from our repertoire and help you to learn it in your chosen voice part. In the meantime you can keep coming to rehearsals and joining in when you can.
Once you’ve learned your song, sing it with a small group of our members. If you can hold your part and you sound pretty good, you’re in!
Some key points:
We provide audio learning resources for all our songs so you don’t need to be a music reader
We’ll never make you sing on your own, even after you join
Our leadership team is there to help you every step of the way, even after you join
The vast majority of people are able to meet the requirements and become a member
You only pay once you’ve completed the induction process.
Our members make a monthly contribution to the club so we can pay for venues, music, learning materials, external coaching, and education for our leadership team. It’s still cheaper than the gym, and much more enjoyable!
What’s more, if you’re under 25 you get a special discount, which means making music with Spirit of Harmony costs less than listening to it on Spotify Premium.
|26 and over||£23 /month|
|Under 16||£5 /month|
Spirit of Harmony is a Member of the British Association of Barbershop Singers (BABS), so members of Spirit will also be able to access the benefits of BABS membership including discounted educational events, discounted convention registrations, and eligibility in BABS quartet and chorus contests.
Do I need Previous singing/musical experience?
No - we're open to new recruits from all walks of life, no experience necessary. Rehearsals always include elements of vocal coaching and technique, so you’ll learn something new every week!
Do I need to be a music reader?
Absolutely not - most of our members don't read music. We have audio aids which help you to learn songs, and the leadership team assumes no musical knowledge.
Will I be good enough?
Great question! Strangely, despite barbershop being one of the most impressive forms of performance, it is also one of the most accessible. Our coaching is light on jargon, and you'll be given all the support you need.
If you think you can't sing, come anyway! You may just be trying to sing in the wrong range for your voice type - a lot of our basses wouldn't go near a melody line!
